Macy's was founded in 1858 as the Great American Department Store. It is an American owned company which opened its first store in New York City, NY. The founder of Macy's was Rowland Hussey Macy. He started by opening up four retail dry good stores between 1843 and 1855 and grew the company into what it is today. There are now over 800 stores across the United States. Macy's also has over 300 eSpot ZoomShops kiosks selling electronic products. In 2010 Macy's had sales of $25 billion.
Macy's is famous for its Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade which started in 1924 in New York City. The Thanksgiving Day Parade marks the arrival of Santa Claus, as he appears in the very last float. Macy's also sponsor the Fourth of July fireworks since 1976. Macy's also holds flower shows, fashion shows and hosts celebrity appearances.
Macy's supports the diverse communities that it serves. It gives back to the community by supporting breast cancer and HIV/AIDS research. It sponsors the American Heart Association's "Go Red" initiative. It helps the hungry with their "Bag Hunger" project. Macy's funds the African Presidential Archives and Research Center at Boston University. It also nurtures students with its Mentoring USA/Bloomingdale's partnership.
